Journal #5 by Gengwei Zhang

Henry Wechsler, the author of the article “Getting Serious about Eradicating Binge Drinking”(2007), discusses about the problem of students from college or high school drinking in campus. He states that binge drinking may cause lots of problem and analyzes the reason why students would like to do it. He also gives us some suggestion about how to make student avoid that.
From this passage, the writer debates the most important reason of binge drinking is that students would like to solve problems relying on this way. Why? Students always want to solve problem in the easiest way, though they don’t know the problems have still not been fixed and may cost them more. What they really focus on is the present value; if I can forget it now, I just do it. It seems everything will be fine, but they always regret after sobering from the mess. It is because they don’t know what the best approach to deal with the problems in their life that they will binge drink again and again. Thus, to teach them alcohols are bad cannot be an efficient way to treat the issue. Instead, behavior logic may be more useful for them.
Another problem cause this issue is that people factitiously distinguish adult as 18 years old or 22 years old. They chronically regard the symbol of physiological mature as the symbol of psychological mature, though these two words are really similar in shape. However, there is no evidence that there is an exact relationship between physiological mature and psychological mature. Students think they are adult and they are old enough to be responsible for their behaviors, but once they got into trouble, their parents would always pay their bills in fact. Thus, how to confirm a proper way to distinguish “children” from adult, who behaves like children but beyond 18 years old or 22 years old, is another importance to solve binge drinking.

What I discuss above is just my own viewpoint. If there is any problem, please let me know in polite language.

According the article of Wechsler, he give us a slice of methods to stop student who come from college and high school from drinking in campus. He consider that some department should focus on the high school students. It is because that “half of college binge drinkers start in high school. Colleges should begin to address this problem at high schools that send a large number of freshmen to their campuses, by sending college students from those high school back to talk the younger student about alcohol and other substance abuse.”  I think that will be more available than any other kind of resort. It is because there is no generation gap between college students and high school students. The student who have the experience from theirselves could shortage the distance. This kind of education could show much persuasion and universalism. College student describe their suffering directly which will have a deeply effect the high school students. There is no denying that their inside fluctuated is unprecedented.

Wechsler also mention that “What institutions need to avoid are one-dimensional programs that focus on particular student but ignore the ways in which colleges help enable some student to continue binging for four years.” From my perspective. I take the attitude that the affair of education is not one facet issue. At same time it is not an instantaneous matter which can be solved in once instruction. There is no doubt that teenage trouble is handful problem which need huge patients to figure out. College student are stating in puberty. Rebelling and frivolity are their representative. We should pay more attention on these students which no confine on drinking questions. There is no way around the fact that their family atmosphere, friend circle and characteristic should be considered. Punishing is dreadful solution of these sensitive issues. They need a friend to understand and share not a commander.

In Jon Gertner’s article named ”True Innovation”, the author talk about the belief of companies which have some characteristic of creative. He is indicative of various figures by the instance of hazardous company, Bell Labs, and how the features lead Bell Labs to distinguished.
Armoring to the issues, I consider that the method of Bell Lab works is beneficial for a business. The author shows fore different dimensions to debate the necessary to be successful. I have a deeply agree with the point that “Mr. Kelly talked fast and walked fast, but he gave his researchers not only freedom but also time”. It is because that Mr. Kelly let his researchers creating their methods in a peaceful atmosphere. I think that it is useful on business manage. There is no doubt the wonderful atmosphere could make folks having an excellent choice. It is not only important for individuals which can make people improve their confidence but also determine the fate of the whole company. Meanwhile, the more freedom staff have the more prefect the done. The series time have no useful except pressure which lead more mistake.

Furthermore, the freedom is not a way of wasting time. Instead it is an efficiency to finished mission. Imagine, people who stay in an idealizing surrounding will more treasure this condition, so no one wants to be life. That is the reason for that wasting time must not be appeared in this circumstances. It is because that the staff who have no well-done the state will feel ashamed. So we cannot ignore the function of this kind of manage.

Are Those Methods Would Effect for Binge Drinking and Opinion on It

(This article is created by XIANGRUI SU with English Author name Leo. Article contain some ideas from Henry Wechsler opinions. Any unauthorized copy, quote and referencing are not allowed)

Binge Drinking can cause some problems, such as forgetting class time and venue, miss submitting homework and writing journal very late. There is an article writer called Henry Wechsler wrote “Getting Serious about eradicating Binge Drinking” to analyzing why university students would like to drink a lot, and suggest some methods seems can control this issue. After reading this article, people can feel that the author is a very radical writer according to his paper.  This Author advised control should be started at high school level as “Another important point of intervention is at the high school level. Half of college binge drinkers start in high school.” (W.Henry 2007 P.22). As people know, people under 18 are not allowed to take any kind of alcohol drinks. Who he thinks he is that can control the issue if it can not be solved by government. On this same method, the author suggest freshman into a university campus should see those selected volunteer for first view. This is so wired, if university does not interfere student’s opinions about campus life at very beginning, why this author concerned about. There are no research indicated that do not let students contact with people who binge drinking will keep them free from binge-drinking. Student, in university are not only study the professional skill on major area, but also they should learn how to survive in society. There is no reason to lie to freshman how the campus supposed to be, and educator should always honest to students. Fancy author of that article believing notifying guardian will works. How old is he that still use this funny method. Author mentioned in his article that “Binge drinking has been so deeply entrenched for so long at colleges that it can not be expected to disappear overnight.” (W.Henry 2007 P.20) means he knew why Binge-Drinking exist in campus for such long time, there is no reason to cancel this very traditionally relax and communicate approach. If people looking for history, university campus binge-drinking operators include business elite, famous actor and even political VIP. Those people use drinking to relax, then to make it as a force to push themselves work harder than before, so that can make success in them area. This article are not use to support university should using laissez-faire for binge-drinking. However, it is use to notice university do not control student dinking, but limit what those drunk people can do in campus. This method would have better effect than those ways suggested by W. Henry.

Jules ( Lu Tao )
In Henry Wechsler’s article “Getting serious about eradicating binge drinking” (2007), he states that binge drinking is a severe problem in college and illustrate some methods to solve this problem. The author reports, “For one thing, binge drinking has been so deeply entrenched for so long at colleges that it can't be expected to disappear overnight.”(Wechsler 20). I have same thought with him that if the college want solve the binge drinking problem, they must have a preparation because the road will be long and drawn-out.
One of these solutions, which I think is the most feasible, is do some intervention at the high-school level. Wechsler states that “Colleges should begin to address this problem at high schools that send a large number of freshmen to their campuses, by sending college students from those high schools back to talk to the younger students about alcohol and other substance abuse”(Wechsler 22). Comparing with college student, high school student do not have enough time and money to keep drinking although they have some slight binge drinking problem. When they realized binge drinking will give them how much trouble, they will easy to change and stop it. In addition, high school student prefer to accept suggestion from who have same age with them rather than teachers and parents.
In other hand, the society may give more supervision to students help them far away with alcohol. The government can make a law to restrict people buy alcohol who have been made trouble because of drinking. The store should stop sale when they find the customer is a sot with criminal record. As far as I am concerned, college have responsibility to help student stop binge drinking. If some bad things happened on their student although out of campus, the college also will have some bad affect.

In Henry Wechsler' s article “Getting Serious about Eradicating Binge Drinking,” (2007) he mentioned the situation of the binge dirking on college and several possible solutions.
In Wechsler' s article, he discusses one of the ways to prevent binge drinking:” College also can require all first-year students who live on campus to reside in dormitories, and not in fraternity or sorority houses” (Wechsler 21).
Personally speaking, I don’t think it’s a good idea to against binge drinking. First of all, the students may think that maybe schools use this policy to make money, as they need to pay for the house renting. On the other hand, though the freshmen live on campus, there are still other students live off campus. They can still go out with their friends if they want to have binge drinking.
What’s more, there is no guarantee that those students who live on campus will follow the rules. If they have binge drinking secretly, no one would know that. And the result might more serious, because there are a lot of students in the dormitories.
The author also claims “Another important point of intervention is at the high-school level” (Wechsler 22). I totally agree with this point. Against binge drinking should begin as early as we can. Some bad habit are raised when they were just kids. High-school students can always get the alcohol even though they are too young to buy them. But they all look forward to the life of college students, so they are willing to listen the advise of the college students. If they are told that binge drinking is forbidden in colleges, they may believe it and obey the rule when they come to colleges.

The last but not the least, I really support the suggestion that “three strikes and you’re out.” The colleges should make some strict policy to against the problem. They may finally give up the activity because of the fear of drop out.

Journal 5 - Lyric

In Wechsler’s (2007) article “Getting Serious about Eradicating Binge Drinking,” he publicizes colleges to pay more attention to the problem of binge drinking and provides verities of possible solutions.

As the author states in this article, “Doing research into actual behavior and then informing students about how many students actually bingegenerally fewer than binge drinker believecan help to reduce the behavior” (Wechsler, 21). Generally, I consider that this idea may have some positive effects for binge drinking problem; however, the influences may not as strong as the author concerns. It is possible that students do not believe the data. No matter whether students involve binge drinking or not, most of them are aware of the actual situation from the personal experience or heard from friends. Even though students are not suspicious of the data proposed by colleges, they likely ignore these information because there are a number of such massages proposed by universities.

There are another point proposed by the author that “college are civic communities, and all too frequently they are disrupted by the behavior of students who drink excessively” (Wechsler, 21). From my perspective, this method has better effects than the former one. Regardless of the importance of this problem, if this is related to the evaluation, students would pay more attention to this issue. There is no doubt that every student care about their grades and reputation in college. So making the connection between the binging drinking to the students; evaluation is truly a good way to solve this problem.

The author also points out, “All of the problem areas that I’ve cited cannot be attacked by college at once” (Wechsler, 23). According to the specific situations, colleges and universities should think deeper and find the most suitable solutions for their own.

Thank you for reading.

Journal #5 by Zhang Hao

I approve most of suggestions gave by Wechsler that colleges could react to binge-drinking behavior on campus.

Binge drinking on campus, without doubt, is a serious problem for colleges, for drinking excessively could not only have a negative effect on student’s health, but also disrupt the order of campus. According to research findings, the author mentions, “Among more than 14,500 students surveyed at 116 institutions, 43 percent reported that they had binged at least once in the preceding two weeks, compared with 44 percent in the earlier study” (Wechsler 20). The binge goes on and cannot be ignored.

One of approach to react is “doing research into actual behavior and then informing students about how many students actually binge” (21). Some of students think that it’s normal to binge drinking on campus of colleges because they have already been adults. The result of research could help them to realize the majority of students who don’t binge can also have fun in other way. If the research can be done monthly and the population of binge declines, it will encourage more and more people, who still keep drinking excessively, to give it up.

In Wechsler’s article, he claims that “Another approach to changing student norms is to focus on the disruptive behavior of binge drinkers” (21). Students who binge drinking should response for the consequence of their behavior, as well as behavior of other drinkers. It could help them to think about themselves and realize the trouble they had brought to others.

It’s true that low-grade students tend to believe high-grade students, rather than their teachers. As a result, the author suggests that “Let future freshmen get their first view from college life from these volunteers, rather than from attending fraternity parties or tailgate events” (23). The volunteers can leave freshman a good impression about college life and help them to get correct understanding of drinking.

I do think alcohol at an appropriate amount necessary when people need an atmosphere of joy, but binge drinking is a kind of mental evasion of problems in one’s life. After waking up, he or she has to face the music and problems remain unsolved.

Firstly, we should think about why so many students drink excessively. Like the author reports, “One is that students who binge tend to think they represent the norm; they argue that they’re doing what most of their peers do” (Wechsler 21). So the first suggestion that “doing research into actual behavior and then informing students about how many students actually binge”(Wechsler 21) definitely would work. If students who often have binge drinking notice they are only a very small group among peers, they will aware that they are the unnormal behaviors. In this way, they will refuse alcohol gradually.

The second way reported “to focus on the disruptive behavior of binge drinkers” is also useful. Because no one can afford the serious consequences of the messes he created after drunkenness such as a big sum of money if you hurt others when you are drunk and being expelled from school.

And another suggestion that introducing the harm of drunk at the high-school level would also work. As a motto says, nip in the bud. If they are told in advance, less excessive drinking phenomena will happen.

As far as I’m concerned, that a behavior is good or bad should have unified understanding by the mass. As we all know, appropriate alcohol is good for health, but too much definitely hurt your body. So the first class in college can be like this, notify the freshman that the damage of binge drink such as the invocatable harm to our body and illustrating pictures of diseased organs.

I do think binge-drinking behavior should be stopped in campus. Even adults much older than us could not control their intake of alcohol, we may be more careful about binge drinking. If we must celebrate something with a little alcohol drinks, we can go out of campus. Above all, binge drinking should be banned in campus, but alcohol drink can be taken in appropriately out of campus.
