Journal # 5 by Jules

Jules ( Lu Tao )
In Henry Wechsler’s article “Getting serious about eradicating binge drinking” (2007), he states that binge drinking is a severe problem in college and illustrate some methods to solve this problem. The author reports, “For one thing, binge drinking has been so deeply entrenched for so long at colleges that it can't be expected to disappear overnight.”(Wechsler 20). I have same thought with him that if the college want solve the binge drinking problem, they must have a preparation because the road will be long and drawn-out.
One of these solutions, which I think is the most feasible, is do some intervention at the high-school level. Wechsler states that “Colleges should begin to address this problem at high schools that send a large number of freshmen to their campuses, by sending college students from those high schools back to talk to the younger students about alcohol and other substance abuse”(Wechsler 22). Comparing with college student, high school student do not have enough time and money to keep drinking although they have some slight binge drinking problem. When they realized binge drinking will give them how much trouble, they will easy to change and stop it. In addition, high school student prefer to accept suggestion from who have same age with them rather than teachers and parents.
In other hand, the society may give more supervision to students help them far away with alcohol. The government can make a law to restrict people buy alcohol who have been made trouble because of drinking. The store should stop sale when they find the customer is a sot with criminal record. As far as I am concerned, college have responsibility to help student stop binge drinking. If some bad things happened on their student although out of campus, the college also will have some bad affect.

  1. It is true that the society should give more help to against the binge drinking. It is not enough if we only rely on the college to do something that can change the situation. For example if the markets can be carefully sale the alcohol to those students, and the neighborhood can help supervise their behavior, the situation might be changed a lot.
