Journal 5 Peng Zhou

In Henry Wechsler' s article “Getting Serious about Eradicating Binge Drinking,” (2007) he mentioned the situation of the binge dirking on college and several possible solutions.
In Wechsler' s article, he discusses one of the ways to prevent binge drinking:” College also can require all first-year students who live on campus to reside in dormitories, and not in fraternity or sorority houses” (Wechsler 21).
Personally speaking, I don’t think it’s a good idea to against binge drinking. First of all, the students may think that maybe schools use this policy to make money, as they need to pay for the house renting. On the other hand, though the freshmen live on campus, there are still other students live off campus. They can still go out with their friends if they want to have binge drinking.
What’s more, there is no guarantee that those students who live on campus will follow the rules. If they have binge drinking secretly, no one would know that. And the result might more serious, because there are a lot of students in the dormitories.
The author also claims “Another important point of intervention is at the high-school level” (Wechsler 22). I totally agree with this point. Against binge drinking should begin as early as we can. Some bad habit are raised when they were just kids. High-school students can always get the alcohol even though they are too young to buy them. But they all look forward to the life of college students, so they are willing to listen the advise of the college students. If they are told that binge drinking is forbidden in colleges, they may believe it and obey the rule when they come to colleges.

The last but not the least, I really support the suggestion that “three strikes and you’re out.” The colleges should make some strict policy to against the problem. They may finally give up the activity because of the fear of drop out.

  1. You have compared two methods that author proposed in the article, and give the analysis based on our actual situation. I think it is really persuasive. But maybe you need to give some methods you think would work at last.
