Journal#1 by Joseph Lin

I got my first smartphone in mid-August 2011, when the first time I came to Beijing and lived on campus. It’s a lonely time for me, without families and old friends around, because the high price of the long-distance call kept them away, and the computer-based chat software was not so convenient.

Then a new device came to my life, changing the way I live. I still remember the first time I touched the beautiful screen of this new phone. It’s such a fantastic moment for me to discover a new world, with only a little box in my hand and its multiple incredible functions. So many APPs can be installed and used in this magic device, including SNS (Social Network Service), games, study tools, and so on. From then on, with all my curiosity and enthusiasm of the future, my smartphone became a friend in pocket, a buddy in life.

I used it to remind the date, to upload my state, to search a name, to play a game. For sharing feelings, reading news, buying cargos, and checking notes, I spent at least 3 hours per day on my smartphone. Whenever I was bored, I reached for it immediately, reflexively, regularly.  Although I missed many deadlines because of the short-lasting power source of my smartphone and the addiction of the schedule reminding APP, I still love my friend in pocket, because they are the way I live.

I think more and more people will influenced by the using of smartphones. Just like me, they will use it not only to kill time, but also to improve lives. Additionally, the smartphone brings more updated information, which can inspire more people to create new ideas, so actually the smartphone will help, instead of harm, the innovation of the society.

  1. Beautiful imagery about your relationship with your smartphone. I think many of us can relate.
