Summary

Marcilo Gleiser’s article entitled “Is an Identical Copy of You, You?” (2015) discusses the issues that relate to the copy of human: the characteristic of the copy,  the possibility of an acceptable copy and the existence of the copy.

Do you think an identical copy of yourself would actually be you?

In my opinion, if there do exist a same copy of a human (i.e. they share a same appearance, a same hobby, a same thought,  a same hobby and a same memory ), to other people except the person who has a copy of himself. For other people, since the person and the person's copy looks the same, and we can't find any differences between that two guys. Even for the people who really does know that person,  there may not be any problems if the person as well as  his copy only appears  separately at a time. I mean, all of our way of distinguishing lose the effect at that moment because the two individuals look like the same at the same item that we distinguish the person. For example, the voice, the smile, the eyes and even the love that the two poor person shows to others are all the same. So, for others, there is no problem to accept a copy one if they don't know it is a copy one since we may not accept a 'fake' one.

But to whom that be copied, there exist huge difference  between the two guys. For the person who is copied and copied whom individually, the other one is not acceptable even if they share same feelings and thoughts. Although no one can distinguish the two people, the person himself knows that he is real and the other one is a copy because they don't share a same soul. The person must knows from bottom of his heart that  he and his copy are different. One reason for that we are enjoy life of ourselves is that we are unique.  Some sort of death occurs when we find that we are not unique any more cause somebody appears the same as us. I don't think  an identical copy of myself would actually be me since I  have an unique soul of mine, and for me myself there is only one real 'me' in the world.

  1. With how individualistic our culture is, I think you make a good point that "copies" are not just troublesome from society's perspective, but from the self that is copied. In our culture, we have this strange dichotomy between wanting to "fit in" to be like everyone else, yet to be different and unique simultaneously. Having a copy of yourself may not work well for the mind who thinks of itself as an individual person, with unique thoughts, strengths and talents.

  2. If there is a copy of a person and other people can not distinguish which of them is the real one, there may not be a huge difference between the person and the copy. The only difference exists in their heart that they know who is the copy one. But even themselves sometimes cannot distinguish the difference because they both consider themselves are the real one.

  3. To be honest, I'm not agree with your opinion. I think this process is just like twin brothers. When they are just born, they looks like each other, and it is difficult to distinguish them. But with the time goes by, the twins live in different life, meet different people and experience different activity. Their character and hobbits are easily be changed. At that time, it is not difficult to distinguish each other.
