Journal #3 Yorick

In Marcelo Gleiser’s article “Is an Identical Copy of You, You,” he states that he would not die for his “copy” as there might be errors of the copy, which means the “identical” copy of a person is not completely identical.

The copy of somebody is just a scene that exists in the film, such as The 6th Day and The Island. But if there is a copy of mine, I might agree living with him but I would not die for my “copy” definitely.
One reason is that the copy of me might not be perfect as the article described. If there are more than two generations of copy of myself, the errors could be enlarged. Then the copy could be changed to another person which can be extremely different from me. I would not die because of an imperfect me, that reason is so ridiculous. But I think living with a copy might not be a serious problem. Living with a person knows you completely could reduce conflicts during the daily life, although it sounds strange. I can also help with each other since we know each other very well.
Another reason would be the difference of two spirits. Although the copy of me has the same experiences and memories as me, it doesn't mean that we share one spirit. I think the copy of me can be considered as my twin brother. There could be reasons living with my brother but I cannot find a reason die for my brother just because he has the same experiences and memories as me. The instinct of a person will not let himself die in order to protect himself. So it is still hard to die for a copy of mine even there is a reason.

I think people should solve the ethical issues of the clone first before they find the way to duplicate a person.

  1. Though people may agree to live with their copies, few people are will to die for them since we are different and can not be regard as a 'whole' person. Thanks for sharing.

  2. At the beginning you say you and your copy are different, but in the middle you are the same, and then at last different again......I am confused.

  3. You said living with a copy might not be a serious problem, but I don't think so. Everyone has his own secret and something he doesn't want others know. But if the copy has the same memory as you, it means that he know everything of you. Don't you think it is embarrassing?

  4. I agree with Peng Zhou’s opinion that living with a copy might not be a serious problem. I think if the copy is human, it means he can have his own life that you cannot control him. It is very danger that if the host cannot control the copy because the reason of he was created is help and save you. He may kill you for his freedom.
