Journal # 2

Jules (Lu Tao)

Biomedical engineering is a field for research and development techniques and devices for medical practice. In the procedure, ethical issues cannot be avoided that it will happened in several aspect such as the relationship of patients and practitioners, and the limit between treatment disease and create superhuman.

Do people who have prosthetics in their brain be responsible for all of their actions? As far as I am concerned, the answer is YES, but it is maybe not everlasting. As a human, we grow a mature body need 18 years approximately. However, damage is instant. If the brain have some diseases or be harm, the doctor can treat it keep it life, but the brain need time to regrow. In addition, the situation depends on which part of brain is harmed. As we now, different part of human brain have different functions that some functions are irreversible such as memory. If the part was harmed which function is save memory, the brain may loss part of memory.

Should biomedical engineers try to develop brains that are superior to the normal human brain? Actually, I do not know they should to try or not, but it is a truth that the negative aspect is bigger than positive aspect. If biomedical engineers create some techniques can develop human brain, it mains human will have more artificial geniuses. They can help people do more research, some world problem may can solved. However, nobody can sure that the techniques can success each time. If the consequence is fail, they created a monster not a genius, who need to shoulder the responsibility?

  1. Good point in your last paragraph. We've had many science-fiction novels published in the past century that have approached topics just like this one (take "Frankenstein" by Mary Shelley or "Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley, for instance). As far as social concern goes, there are certainly more negatives to be wary of when it comes to developing superior humans.

  2. Why do you think that the development of brains by biomedical engineers has much more negative aspects than the positive's? I think the engineers can create a better way to modify the bad effects.

    1. Human brain is different with other organs, it be used for judge life or death. The body experiment is not be permited. I know the engineers will find some method to do better. However, there are too much problem need be solved.

  3. I think people always focus the positive aspects. To the negative aspects, if they can accept what it brings, they will forget it.
