Journal #3 Zhaoyang
In Marcelo Gleiser's article "Is an Identical Copy of You, You?" (Jan 20, 2015) he asks readers to think about this question and would we be comfortable dying, knowing the other you would still be alive. The author chooses not to die for his identical copy, for he believes that there must be errors when constructing his copy so that his copy cannot be called exactly the same as him. I would like to answer the question " Do you think an identical copy of yourself would actually be you?". In fact, my answer is similar to the writer's, but I do not agree with his reason. If, assuming this to be true, there is an identical copy of me, but he is not going to live the same way as I do because at the time he wakes up he will think about where he is. However, at the same time, I will be thinking that whether he thinks the same as me. As you can see, ideas are different from the beginning. Undoubtedly, we will live differently and think differently as time goes by. I recommend a movie which talks about characters' reaction when their identical copies appear in front of them -- Coherence. Each person has several "copies", and the most interesting part is that each of them thinks and acts differently. Especially, they are scared to find out so many " myself ". Those characters believe that copies of themselves outside the house are definitely thinking not the same, and copies may try to kill them for they seem strange to them so they choose to act first. As I stated before, an identical copy of me is definitely not me because he is not going to experience what I have experienced or what I am experiencing. Different life tracks lead to different ways of thinking and acting. What are we going to do if we meet? Fight? I am not sure, but it is indeed strange to see me in front of me, without a mirror separating us.

We are different from our copies. It is a little weird to find a person that is as same as me. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteAlthough my copy and myself are completely identical at the beginning, we are on the separated way with time going by,
ReplyDeleteThe different ideas between self and the copy determine that the copy cannot replace the original people. So there is no doubt that they are different social status, however, they have the same physical factor. This is one controversy of this complicated issue.
