Journal 4 - By LiYuxuan

summary

According to Jon Gertner in his article "True Innovation", he explains Mervin Kelly's philosophy for innovation. Kelly believed that innovation came from a group of people with different knowledge and skills who work together in harmony. His philosophy contains several elements: architectural, aspirational, organizational, time and the belief in endless pursue.

Well, I think that Bell lab works is good for a business. And in my opinion, since innovation is everywhere, Kelly's philosophy can be useful in everywhere at anytime.

I think that time is one of the most important element for innovation. Time is a must for success. Our life is limited, and nothing can be existed forever. That is to say, we must meet our goal in a period of time which can be a few minutes, hours, days, years or even can only be measured by a human's life time.No matter how good we did for other elements, if the unfinished job meets the deadline, well, it is over.

"Time is money", this is a saying that most of us know. But only time can become money, money can not buy time. So it is vital to make full use of time. Innovation is an activity that may require a lot of time. At that point, efficiency becomes more important. Nothing can be finished without time, so time is a necessity for innovation.

For most people who is good at create wonderful things, time is regard as the most wonderful treasure. Take Edison as an instance. In his 80 years old, he claimed that he was 135 years old and his success derived from his focus on today. There are much more examples about innovator's treasuring time like Jobs, Einstein and so forth. Life is fair since death is the final stop for everyone. At that time, the Lady Luck tends to cast more attention on those well prepared who can make full use of their life.

Not only in the area of innovation, but also in any other business treasuring time is essential. How could success appears without well management of time? For some sort of Significance, all of us are millionaires since we still have time. With the help of well management of time, there is high chance for good business.

  1. It seems to me though that, in the article, Mervin Kelly was one who gave an ample amount of time to all his employers. Therefore, instead of setting deadlines (which, most people would say is "time efficient") he instead gave his engineers years to complete a project. Do you still think that Kelly would agree with the maxim, "Time is money" in light of these circumstances?
